Shingles is a painful, blistering rash that can appear around the middle or one side of the body.
When you contracted chickenpox as a child the virus (varicella zoster) stays dormant in the nervous system. It can become reactivated if the immune system is weakened due to illness or simply the ageing process.
If you are aged 70+ you may be eligible to receive this vaccine from your NHS GP.
There is however, a vaccine available privately for patients who are aged 50+ which offers protection against shingles and helps prevent post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) which can be extremely painful and hard to treat.
